whoopsies.

So, we managed, to again, not update our blog in a timely manner.Oops.

So, during April, we were vegetarians, at least until Easter.April was also a time of finals, projects, massive meltdowns and the like. So I was vegetarian and so was he, but to be honest, most of April I have no idea what was going on...it was a whirlwind. Now its over, and I am about to start one spring class, and then take one in the summer time. Nate is happy working and I am starting a new second job for the summer coaching at the boat club. When we did have a few moments in April to cook, we made a few veggie friendly meals

Like chickpea burgers and a corn salad featuring cherry tomatoes, avocados, cilantro and onion. It was yummy.

Nate had a small problem retuning to a non-vegetarian diet, it really upset his stomach, so I do no think we will be trying that again. I did not have much of a problem, but I think I have an iron gut....perhaps because I have been rowing for 8 years, and rowers are hungry people....they tend to eat what ever is in front of them.

I'm tired of talking about April, I am enjoying a lazy Sunday with Nate, we shoved the couches together to create a super comfy lounging space and we are still lounging on the couch, watching Stripes. We have talked about new ways to save some money for our dream adventure, such as using only cash to buy gas, it is about 10 cents cheaper that way. I am also going to start spending one week per month, not spending ANY money.None.
It's is very easy to do, and I think I am going to make it the 2nd week of each month, that way, all my bills are paid, and rent etc, and then I spend the next week saving, and finding ways to save.
Okay, it's 2PM, we've lounged enough, time to go find something fun to do.

Procrastination.

Sorry to all of the 7 people who follow this blog, haha. We have been procrastinating!

For all of you who missed the first entry, we are refraining from caffeine this month. Ask Nate how that is going for him,

'Hey Nate, How is that going for you?'

'Uh, it's not going so good'

Followed by the most zoned out

'.....but I didn't have any caffeine today'

Nate has been struggling this month, I have been alright. There are some days, when I find myself wanting a cup of coffee to perk up a little bit, but I survive.

But, let's recap the first two weeks. March started with me in South Carolina, on a training trip that was violently interrupted by the worst stomach flu of all time. I was stuck inside a hotel room writhing in pain and clinging to the toilet. That is as far in detail as I will go for you all. And without me around to remind Nate of our new resolution...he forgot about the first of March, and drank caffeine.....however; he has been trying.

Nate just said'
'This month has been less caffeine intake, and not no caffeine, and I saved....30$'

He is very, very tired without caffeine....it is actually kind of cute.

Lets just make sure we understand each other, there is nothing wrong with drinking coffee, and I am not mad at him. He has been trying, and I know that he will go back to drinking coffee next month, which is just fine. We're just trying to save ourselves some money and make our AT dreams come true!

(cue cheesy music)

Let us also take time to re-cap February and out 'No Take-Out' plan.

It went so WELL.And we saved SO much money, and it put us into such a good habit, and I am SO grateful for the money we saved, and the good habits we created.

Nathan also got a new job!Whoohoo!I am waiting on two jobs for the summertime, hoping for good things!

Snow Day Part 2

The last time we updated, we had a massive snow storm, followed by a lazy snow day. Last night we had a surprising snow storm, and now,an even more surprising snow day. We were lucky enough to have a few nice days of sunshine and warmer temperatures in between, but that was crushed in a matter of a few hours...

So, where have we been? What have we been doing?
I have been mostly busy with the Rocky Horror Show, which opened, and then closed this past Saturday night. Nate has been busy with usual, work, then school. Well, not so much work anymore.....Nate was fired from his job recently, and has since been on the hunt, not finding many options. It sucks, quite a bit actually. They say, be careful what you say on the Internet, and I am still going to be careful, but in my opinion, Nate did not deserve to loose his job. He works harder than any person I have ever met, and I feel that he was wronged. I was going to describe that situation more, but I have been trying to get better at risk assessment.

I'm done.

The above was all me,and not Nate. So, if you're going to shoot anyone, let it be me.

So, February has been a busy month, and during my tech week for Rocky, and the majority of the run of the show, I was so tempted by the lure of fast food. I brought my dinner every night, usually a cold sandwich, and raw veggies, maybe some pita chips....and ate that while many people around me ordered Jimmy Johns, pizza and a variety of other fast food delivery options. The thing that was the hardest to do, was to eat a cold meal every night. I love to cook. I love to cook myself something different as often as possible, and try something new things when I can. It was frustrating to brown bag my dinner. Not to mention, working on shows is exhausting(but always rewarding) it would be so much easier to have someone else make me dinner, and then bring it to me.

I did survive the run of the show, without the help of fast food.

However; as this month draws to a close, we can not lie to to you all and tell you that we did not cheat. We did cheat, Sunday morning at The Bomber Restaurant. Some of Nates old friends from Interlochen came into town and were on a quest for breakfast, Nate had wanted to catch up, and for me to meet them, so we ate french toast and pancakes, and drank coffee at the local greasy spoon.

We have no regrets, and plan to finish out the month without any more cheats. The purpose of our monthly goals is not to deprive ourselves of certain things, but to put into perspective how we consume or use that commodity over the span of a month. Not spending money on food from other sources than the grocery store has allowed us to see where our money goes, and how much we spend on food during the month. Nate noted that he spent $83.00 in the month of January on dine in/carryout etc alone. I did not calculate my average for January.....I am a little scared to, hahah. So, while we cheated just a little bit, we feel that our lesson has been learned, and will spend the rest of our days paying more careful attention to how we spend our money, and what we put in our bodies.

Next month is no caffeine month, Nate is not looking forward to it, even though it was his idea.

I do not consume that much caffeine to begin with, but this will continue to help me see where my money goes....instead of buying a soda on campus when I am thirsty of tired, sticking with my water bottle.

Nate has negotiated a deal in regards to next month because he is addicted to coffee. Mind you, there are worse things to be addicted to. Nate has promised that on March 1st, he will not drink anything caffeinated, no coffee, no soda. Nothing. He will alot himself 10$ this month to have coffee at The Ugly Mug. Limiting his caffeine consumption greatly.

february

February began with a giant snow storm. The threat of the incoming storm had been present since late last week, and as we both arrived home from work yesterday evening, we thought a trip to the grocery store was appropriate to get some dinner supplies, and while the incoming snow would have been a great excuse for chinese take-out and beer, we are upon 'No Take-Out Month' -Nate is very thankful that it is the shortest month of the year, he really likes pizza. I am for one, hoping it will instill a habit in me to NOT call Jimmy Johns. I get especially sucked into that habit when I am working on a show, and go from class, to work, to a show all night.

Nate curled up in front of the heating vent.

Anyways,so we made dinner, burgers and had a few beers and hunkered down to a nice movie....
or so we thought. We began with a romance movie that Nate had pulled from netflix, after I called the plot line in less than 10 minutes, he got frustrated with me, and found a different movie to watch. We watched The Machinist, which ended up fucking up my life for about 40 minutes, its dark, heavy, and not exactly what I had in mind.....in fact, it led me to believe that there were snow zombies outside, not that the film had anything to do with zombies, it was just dark.

That problem was remedied later in the evening, as my room mate Monica made brownies, we watched The Incredibles, made margaritas and then went to bed.

An excellent result of snowpocaplypse

So, this morning, we awoke to not as much snow on the ground as we had expected, but it is still snowing right now. Made a delicious breakfast, Nate zoned out to CBC Radio 2, and now we are off to do homework and the like for the rest of the day...Who knows if tomorrow will have work/class/practice or anything of the like

We've also decided that dining in, is a copout, if this month is no take out, then we cant just dine in either, that is cheating. That also means that no afternoon pit stops at the food places on campus for a snack.I just asked Nate if we are making The Ugly Mug and exception, he gave me his best puppy dog eyes, and nodded silently, yes.

He says if I want him to survive, he has to go to get his coffee. He also needs his coffee time, he is one for sitting in quiet and drinking his coffee. He likes it, I am willing to let coffee slide for now, March is no caffeine month, I suppose we will have to prepare for this somehow....

Anyways, here is February, no take-out,covered in a storm right now.See you doods later.

we're still here.

So, where are we, week 3ish?We both disappeared for quite some time, ideally we want to update this more than once a week, but with me opening a show and Nate gone in North Carolina for a few days, we were busy.

So, what have we been up to?Not eating fried foods!Travel, shows, as mentioned above. Neither one of us can remember if we talked about our Appalachian Trail savings account that we started and put our first 10$ in sometime in the past week. We even have a jar at my house:

Perhaps we will get another one to add at Nates house?I've got a few more milk bottles lying around, or perhaps it will be more delicious to go down to the CO-OP and get some Caulder Dairy Chocolate deliciousness milk of awesome.

We'll see.

Coffee intake has gone up,according to Nate, not really for me yet,but I am pretty sure I am headed that way.

Going back to this Appalachian Trail idea, I am currently enrolled in a Backpacking Class, no I am not kidding,I am a Parks and Rec minor. Part of the class...
Nate interjects
"I walk to work!"
... is to plan a 4-7 day hike, for 4 people, and I have chosen to hike the Virginia Highlands section of the AT from Damascus to Harpers Ferry WV. A good chance to plan for the real thing. At least I hope.

We're still eating a lot of pizza, its sort of an accident though. Everyone else around us also eats a lot of pizza. Everyday at work Nates co-workers get pizza, while I was at tech and during the run of my show, every other day someone would order pizza and other tech staff would partake.

Next month is no-take out, and pizza is the king of takeout, and we will see a dramatic decline of pizza consumption. The good news is that I have practice 6 days a week, so it's not like I'm a super fatty. Although, that is what Jillian Michaels thinks, I keep getting spam from her.
Nate is nowhere near the idea of super fatty, lets face it, he will never be.

So, on to the week, see you doods later.

week 2

So we havent updated in a while because of going back to class and word, but rest assured, neither one of us has succumb to fried fast food.Even though at work one day, all the fellas got chinese food, and nate did not partake, but choosing to have a lunchtime classic, pb&j instead. Even though our beloved friend/roommate Robert has taunted and teased with the likes of falafel, french fries, and the like, we have stood our ground. We have found that our lives are cheaper sans fried fast food, and that $7.59ish that I sometimes spend at the student center Wendys can now go to my bank account, and instead of making my ass fat, I am making my bank account fat. Nate has noticed the way we consume meat in comparison to fruits and veggies is way off balance, and we are fixing that. Finding out that there are other sources of protein beyond meat product that taste delicious, as well as a variety of other foods that are great without being deep fried.Nate has found that fresher foods fill you up faster, and keep you from being hungry, as well as I. I think that we have always known this, but now we are becoming more conscious of our decisions.

Our vice has been pizza, its not the greatest thing in the world for you, but it is not the best either. We usually make our own pizza with whole wheat pizza dough from Trader Joes, which, by the way is only .99 cents!Awesome! But we did, actually end up ordering in pizza one night, we were busy, hungry, and it was cheap, but we did have veggies as a topping.

We have also discussed adding NO PIZZA to one of our months!
OH NO!!!!

Other than adjusting our diets to become better ones,we have also talked about becoming more financially stable. Nate and I are working on individual savings accounts, as well as a joint account that we hope to use to fund future adventures. One of these big adventures being a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. It started out as a pinky promise in the beer garden at the Corner Brewery, and is now more in the planning stages of an amazing adventure.

Lots of cooking to be going on this week, curry tomorrow, plum spiced chicken, stuffed chicken later on this week.Who knows what else?!Its the week of the chicken I guess, BAWK,BAWK!!!

So now, we are on the couch after a delightful meal of roasted mushrooms with capers, parsley and lemon juice, mashed potatoes, and pork chops, we are going to eat ice cream.
Not a usual thing for either of us, mostly because I am aware of my massive sweet tooth and if I buy anything sweet I will eat the entire box/can/bag etc in a very short amount of time.....but tonite is different. I need a pint of Ben and Jerrys for a prop in my show, but we cant feed actors on stage, especially sugar-sooo I have to empty it somehow!Gosh, the things I am required to do for my job, its so tough sometimes, I guess I will have to deal with this pint of Milk&Cookies ice cream and pray this never happens to me again!
What a tough job......props...sheesh!!!

: D
hehehe

Nate starts night class tomorrow, Life Drawing II-the art of drawing naked people for 3 hours!I am on the first full week of classes tomorrow and am already procrastinating on homework.Whoops!
Hopefully more regular updates this week.
